It doesn't take much mental gymnastics to think of a terrestrial version that sticks magnetic ore to themselves, resulting in their magnetic powers.
Currently, Arvalis' version also gives me difficulties imagining just what the fuck his version of Magnezone would look like. Whereas if it were based on a decorator crab, you could have all the magnetic ore fusing together and trapping the crabs within a permanent outer shell.
My point being, if he was really dead set on turning magnets into crabs, he didn't go far enough with his redesign. Even his official description for that image didn't bother coming up with an explanation, he just said the equivalent of "kek they're hovercrabs, I dunno". It's lazy no matter how you look at it.
