ground and poison types have bigger movepools in general.

it's that simple. Nidoking is BOTH ground and poison.

like, look what Muk and Weezing can learn. Electro attacks, Fire attacks, Plant attacks...

on top of that Nidoking can learn Water attacks despite being weak to water.

I think it was the first pokemon (or line) they ever programmed. that's why.

Nidoran is just as important for the series as Gengar and Pikachu because it kinda started out with those.

let me guess, the nidos are also based off that "Rabbits are from the moon" stuff, which is why the require moon stones to evolve, right? moon stone only makes sense for Clefairy in gen 1 though.

This is also the origing for the Huge Power and rabbits things.

In Japanese, the ability is called Chikaramochi, literally "Muscleman", but it can also be read as "Chikara mochi", meaning Mochi Strength.
Mochi is a type of sweet made smashing rice with a wooden mallet, just like the moon rabbit.

Every Pokemon's moveset is part of their design. The moves made available to them are to illustrate or emphasise (or parody) that which they are designed to represent. Gen1 designs are a little more all over the place and baseless. Nidoran lines are rabbit-Baragon things. The moves represent that.
