How the fuck does that even work? What is the point? Why not just make a separate mon entirely?
Did they even try? The Hawaiian islands have all kinds of fucking stories about vengeful and watchful spirits and shit, ghosts that come down from mountains and stuff. They could've just made it Ground with Ghost as the sub-type and used any of those spiritual stories.
Like, shoot, maybe the ghost of Marowak, a intrinsically protective species of pokemon due to the circumstances surrounding their fucking birth, try to protect Cubone in Alola (and can only become ghosts capable of such for one of the many bullshit Hawaiian spiritual related reasons translated into Pokemon speak) and when they evolve they see it as their final and most powerful way to ensure that they are safe: by merging or giving up its' spirit to the evolving Cubone.
Or, fuck, Cubone (the, ya know, lonely pokemon) that end up as kill seek comfort in other Cubone and band together, merging during evolution for safety/so that they are never alone again.
God damn it, what is the given reason behind the fire? If they just did it because of the god damn Hawaiian fire twirlers I will be incredibly disappointed.
