That Lapras is a PokeRide mon. They don't battle for you. You rent them to use as an HM slave, outside your party.

Pokemon used for PokeRide likely aren't used in battle.
You didn't use Rhyhorn or Mamoswine in XY, and you couldn't even encounter Pokemon while riding on Skiddo.

Because we know you can use ride mon in trials (Stoutland) and we haven't seen regular surf in the game yet, but we have seen Pokeride Lapras multiple times.

Lapras is the regular surfer, Sharpedo is an upgraded rider that can break rocks and move faster. At least judging by the trailers.

Lapras will be the early surf pokemon to just get across simple bodies of water. Sharpedo will be the faster, technical one that can jump and break certain obstructions in the water.

I have a feeling that Lapras will still maintain usefulness for fishing, as they show you doing it, while I doubt you could do so on the jet-ski sharpedo.

I'd imagine you get Stoutland fairly early as well, since it's just speed + an itemfinder, so you'll still have a reason to need it instead of Tauros or Mudsdale.

And Charizard is probably the last.

Charizard is likely for soaring.

I also could see Lapras being needed for caves and smaller areas. Sharpedo is probably beat for quick main route travels.
