So, as far as accomplishments go, this is actually something of a big deal. We can also comment on how Red used legends(in origin), but Ash has also beaten his fair share.
I can't say one is better than the other because Red was better, within his region, but Ash has out of region experience. We'll never know how Red would do in, say, the Kalos League because Red will never challenge it.
