Looks like the last shop on the left has a pickaxe sign. Could it be that an underground feature like in Sinnoh is back? Or maybe a new type of secret bases?

An anon posted an image of that earlier. Each island has a building plot with no building, typically near a pokecenter. It's likely a secret base type mechanic, with the construction building being how you set stuff up.

If the Chinese leak is to be believed and didn't just shove in a bit of false info for the lulz, it may be where you help build the Gyms after completing each island.

It never said you build gyms, per say, but it did mention that you were tasked with creating the league in Alola, which is WHY there are no gyms.

I wouldn't be surprised to see gyms as a secret base alternative, shared with your friends. But I think people are getting their hopes up to expect that.

As a lot of people pointed out, there are huge empty plots of land around major destinations in Alola

AND in the live action trailers, you can even see the kids setting up their own forts and secret bases!

So hopefully, they're going to bring back secret bases, but maybe this time, we can build and customize them from the ground up!

Fun Fact: Ohmori, the game director, created the Underground in Diamond and Pearl

Hawaii cannot support an underground system because it's islands.

However, I can picture the ability to use a pickaxe across Alola. Have the mining mini-game in SM without the underground. Like how ORAS secret bases had the flag game from DP and Ohmori directed ORAS.

Maybe it's not so much that we rebuild the league as a story point, but rather we can create our own Gyms and streetpass folks can challenge us.

So the reason that there's no Gyms from a story pov is that we ARE the Gym Leaders?

I gotta come up with a type-themed pun for my character's name.

They are just battle areas like on melemele-it was mentioned in E3. Don't get your hopes up- also I'm p sure it's a palm tree. And we've seen no other shop, and it'd be a weird place in the game to have it. Wish I was wrong tho. But I'm not
