Honestly they limited them by making possibly all the Pokémon in this trio (Marshadow Included) part Psychic.

The mascot legends have only had unique abilities twice though.
Ho-oh, Lugia, Suicide, Palkia, and Dialga all have pressure
Giratina Origin has Levitate
Reshiram and Zekrom have renamed Mold Breaker.
Only Groudon, Kyogre, Rayquaza, Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde have unique abilities.

Maybe they're trying to slow down power creep or something. M-Fug, P-Don and Paindeer all in a row was a bit much. Also makes it easier to give them alt forms or Megas in the future.

All post-gen 3 box legendaries are always stuck with situational or ordinary abilities for some reason. there's no ability they have that makes their stats higher gives them some sort of uncounterable edge even if it is prepared for

This. In a earlier trailer, it showed Solgaleo with 212 HP at Lv.50. Assuming it has 31 IVs and 0 EVs, Solgaleo base HP is 137. If 0 IVs and EVs, its HP is 152. Solgaleo is going to be fucking bulky.

Well, most box art legendaries are not extremely fast to begin with (typically ≤100 Spd). Solgaleo was able to one-shot 0 IV Salamence with Sunsteel Strike, which is pretty impressive for non-resisted attack. I think it is safe to assume that its also going to really strong, probably +140 Atk.

Lunala getting a Multiscale clone is a blessing if anything. It ensures that it wouldn't get fucked by Pursuit or Sucker Punch. If it does Calm Mind and Roost, Shadow Ball would do ticklish damage with enough boosts.
