The problem is that the 3DS isn't powerful enough to run actually good looking 3D sprites. Look at any Pokemon that has fire or smoke coming off of it (e.g.: Typhlosion, Magmortar, Rapidash, Torkoal) and you'll notice how bad they actually look.
Now look at the 3D console games. The models looked great (bar Infernape, which seems to have both modelled flame and particle flame). Another problem is how washed out the colours are on a lot of Pokemon.
>>28379011Gen II definitely had some great sprites. Great to move away from Gen I's awkward perspective on a lot of Pokemon and actually using normal sized back sprites. Crystal's animations stood out over pretty much anything in Emerald and Gen IV due to Crystal actually using more than 2 sprites per animation.
