Do you think game freak's design variety has improved?

Or are they devolving? I don't think they are. They've got pretty much every base covered now.

Exactly this. X&Y was the downfall, Sun and Moon will be the nail in the coffin. But yeah i'm surprised the franchise survived 20 years.

It's improved tenfold.
Gen 1 was terrible and samey design wise for comparison. A bunch of Rhydon lookalikes, various Pokemon that are just balls with faces, multiple "Cute pink blobs", topped with "It's an animal, but a different color than normal"

Every Gen has it's hit's and misses. The designs have gone through a change style wise.
Early mons had more if an ''edge'' to them, while today a majority of the designs are way more complex.

But in my opinion, it's the complexity that makes most designs better.

Gen I-II are almost all literally my mom's' with barely any variety. Some of the new mons may be "bad" but at least they have interesting designs.

Holy shit, this is pretty much all the kanto dex, but I guess this is why genwunners appreciate it, since it's simplier design.

A lot of the 7th gen pokemon look fucking terrible, except for Pyukumuku, Cutiefly and Lurantis (Jangmo-o is ok though). Even the 7th gen box legends look shit.

Talonflame line, greninja line, dragalge line, aegislash and box legends from 6th gen are fucking great though.

Even if someone doesnt like the new mons, that's why there's games like X/Y with that much level of pandering to "tuh originals". Being the worst game in the series, it's obvious why they would be perfect for the worst fans in the series.

Yes, very much so. If you look at genwun for example, there used to be a lot more recolerd animals, pokemon that just get bigger when they evolve, pokemon that just grow more heads or combine when they evolve, there were like 6 kaiju pokemon that were the exact same except for their color, and a lot of samey looking pic blob pokemon.
