That's bullshit, and I'll now explain why:
Gladius is obviously related to both Lusamine and Lillie, it's not just the fact that he looks a lot like them, he was introduced in the same exact trailer Aether was introduced. On top of that his ace is Type: Null. There is no way a group of thugs could ever manage to create such a mostruosity, Type: Null was clearly at least partially manmade. It makes perfect sense to consider Aether is behind Type: Null's research, and that whatever happened to him caused Gladius to run away from Aether, to join the group of misfits without friends or family, Team Skull.
Now, it could be that Type: Null was just an accident, and that Aether feels bad about it, maybe Gladius just ran away because Type: Null was originally his first Pokémon, think as if that Purrloin Hue was chasing in B2W2 was turned into that, and so Aether is not really evil, that was just a very unfortunate accident that still caused Gladius to feel disgusted by them. However I still doubt it, Type: Null's characteristics are too specifically made to suit any situation, and to challenge mythological creatures for no apparent reason but "IT - COULD - WORK".
Yes, I can see it entirely possible, as dumb as it might be, that Guzma is so bitter about not being Captain that he wants to take over the region, but so bitter that he decides to summon Ultra Beasts and Solgaleo/Lunaala to destroy it? Yeah I won't buy it. There simply cannot be any possible way the Ultra Beasts just magically one day decided to appear in Aether for no reason, unless they actually tried to get in contact with them. Again, that might just have been an unfortunate accident, but why would you bother researching Ultra Beasts at all if all you care about is making a paradise for Pokémon?
tl;dr: Gladios became a rebel because of what Aether did, Type: Null is too suspicious and is owned by someone related to Aether, there is no way UBs and cover legendaries are related to Team Skull.
