i don't understand why people think that pokemon games need a story, you get a whole region with lots of cool monsters in it, go make your own story
i also don't understand how people can look at gen v's story and think it's anything other than awful, i get the impression that a lot of the people who enjoyed gen v's story are the sort of people who compare real world politics to game of thrones/house of cards. i mean there's just no way you can be a sentient human being and find "raising pokemon can be bad, unless it's done well, in which case it can be good" compelling
also n, cheren, fucking bianca or whoever are not characters, here's a test; imagine the speech bubbles coming out of each of the characters during cutscenes gave no indication which character was speaking, would you be able to infer which character was speaking from the dialogue alone? no, because they're all the exact same except for ideas, i.e. they're just exposition dumps with no personality and it doesn't matter for example if n had an implied fucked up childhood if the character himself gives no indication of this
basically gen v had a terrible story told in an intrusive and bloated way, it fails to justify its existence and does nothing other than slow down or obscure the good parts of the game
the gen after it was pretty bad too but at least they weren't actually trying there
