For example, after doing a mono-pure-water playthrough in X, I became bros with Basculin and Alomomola. After a normal-type run in FireRed, I liked Clefable. A Nuzlocke run can also serve this purpose well, but I haven't actually taken one to completion yet.

In general, though, keep an open mind. I thought Octillery was pretty meh, but I decided to use one when I wasn't sure what else to add to my Gold team. It ended up being bro-tier against Claire and the E4. Good Surf user, too.
