I was 3 and had been woken up by my crying grandfather. My mom--his daughter--was in there...My dad was too but he made it out alive. But he killed himself 2 months later.

i was near DC so i was scared that the fucking PENTAGON blew up. still not sure what happened there.

then i spent my hours watching jets fly overhead. it felt kinda awful, i was worried america was going into a war state.

well, there was lots and lots of war, but never on american soil.

I was 9 and home sick from school that day. I lived in Brooklyn right by the river, so the WTC was visible from my home. My mom was out getting me medicine and left me home alone for a while and called me while she was out telling me to shut all of the windows and stay inside. I saw the second plane crash, people falling from the windows, the smoke even reached my home. It was a really traumatic experience for me I had nightmares for weeks.

I was at school. My mother hadn't gone to work that day and it was a good thing because she worked very close to the location. She went to pick me up since class was dismissed when the news hit. I kept trying to watch Arthur but every channel was airing the same grim footage. It was about as depressing as it could be for an eight year old. The loss of life and wanton destruction really bothered my household, but the reaction was quite minimal when compared to that of others.

I was in eighth grade. had just woken up and turned on the tv and every channel was playing it. it didn't feel totally real, honestly. but I went to meet a friend to walk to school, and he could swear he saw the smoke from where we lived...in Arizona. school did its best to carry on as normal but history class was us watching the News as a new piece of it came to be.

I vividly remember being upset at the "patriotism" and "unity" that sprung forth from the event more than anything. Flags were proudly displayed everywhere when before there had been none, and it made me mad that a tragedy had to occur for people to do that. we also had a lot of violence against the Arab people just living their lives here too. and the flags didn't last long. so 9/11 made me very cynical, but not because of the towers.

I was at school. Elementary school, don't remember which grade. Not in the US.
School sent us home early for whatever reason (maybe the teachers wanted to watch the news coverage, or parents thinking a nuclear war as about to start were calling in, I don't fucking know), when I arrived both planes had already hit and my family was watching the news and discussing it. I remember being more upset I couldn't watch the morning cartoons despite getting out of school early than anything. I don't think I knew what the WTC was, so there was no instant recognition. It took a few hours or days for me to understand what was happening.
