Johto is truly the point of no return for the show. Couldn't even be bothered to fully evolve one of his starters, the original director and writer for the show quit, the sterile digital look came in halfway through.

For the OS at least. I do think the show lost a lot of its comedy routes when it went sterile to keep other languages in mind.
