"Basically, we’ve got three entities that are of importance to the discussion today. The Demiurge, also known as Yaldabaoth, the Monad, and Sophia.
The Demiurge is a powerful world creating entity that believeshimself to be not just a god, but the God. In fact, according to many branches of Gnosticism, the Demiurge is the Old Testament Judeo-Christian God. However, the Demiurge is not omnipotent, despite his own beliefs. He’s also described as, at best, an arrogant jerk. The worst depictions of him have him directly responsible for nearly all that’s wrong with the world."
"Sophia is a bit more diverse of a character. Her exact nature in Gnostic scripture varies heavily, but the important part is that she is a protector of humanity who fights against the Demiurge. Some branches say she was the serpent in the Garden of Eden in Christian theology, while others say she broke apart and became human souls. Still, she was never a god and never considered herself to be one.
Finally, the third entity we’ll be discussing is the Monad. The Monad is the true God of the universe. Not its creator, mind you, but the most powerful being around. The Arceus to the Demiurge’s Mew, if you will. The Monad is essentially good, but mostly remains neutral, preferring to let humans discover it on their own, hence the religious aspect of Gnostic beliefs. In fact, many Gnostic sects associated Jesus with the Monad.
…It gets far more complicated than that, but those points are the necessary ones for today’s discussion.
With me so far? Demiurge equals bad dude who thinks he’s god. Sophia equals good girl who knows she’s not god. Monad actually is God."
