It would become instantly panned as advocating bestiality directly and as if it were common, even if it really wasnt. It would completely destroy the image of the pokemon brand as a whole, since now every single one of those creatures represents something sexual. parents (almost) worldwide would try to cut any connections their kids might have to pokemon, and nintendo itself would suffer horrible loses due to the comercial failure and loss of revenue that would ensue, not to mention how GF could possibly end if their #1 franchise got destroyed over one detail.

Or it'd be something a few people would get mad over and that GF wold cut after one instalment, who knows.

However Game Freak has been giving very subtle hints that this would be a possibility.

I would try to give them some personality outside battles instead. To make your starter a plot-relevant character to further the "Pokemon are your friends" premise.
