The series would have changed regardless of whether Ohmori was in charge. Game directors typically just guide and manage the project, they're almost never solely responsible for all the design choices.

I can't even begin to understand the mentality of the people who think Ultra Beasts are ruining the franchise. There are only going to be a handful of them total and they're clearly going to be acting in an antagonistic role. The majority of the game is still going to be related to catching and battling with Pokemon.

Yokai Watch pulled this shit too, its why I didn't pick it up ESPECIALLY after the combat/catching mechanics didnt win me over. The whole point of a monster collecting game is to collect. Why waste resources designing something that's only meant to appear once in the main plot of all damn things? Especially since Totem-Mon are already a thing.

Fun, variety, difficulty, world building.
Seeing as they aren't confined by pokemon limitations they can have things like the HP of Chansey and the attack stats of X-two along with moves that could break the game if they were used by players like say a 90BP Power Up Punch.
Basically by making enemies that aren't Pokemon they can add what people have been asking for from the series.

Totem mon aren't any stronger than regular Pokemon they just get a +1/2 in something at the beginning of the battle and can summon other pokemon.
Essentially they're just the alpha of the line.

Yeah, and the point on wanting to catch the UBs is so I can use them within the turn-based RPG system against others. So many people being up SMT as an example of why these things can be cool even if uncatchable while failing to mention that game still allows you to use said boss monsters after the fact.

We don't know that though, and the suggestion you just made is still operating within the limitations of the typical Pokemon system. Some other anon mentioned this before but literally the only way we could actually have UB encounters break the mold for battling is to not have it be the standard battle in the first place and more a stylus tapping minigame. At least, based on what we know about them in the first place.

Yeah no. There's more than one way to break away form the mold and keep the original feel of the game and it's happened on multiple occasions in the series in particular gen 3 and 5 with their new battle modes and the former's addition of natures and abilities.
It seems like you and that anon have a problem. Instead of thinking outside of the box you just move directly into another box.

As a counterpoint, to be fair they have had the implication that pokeballs somehow limit power. Say that outright, give a legendary a "different form" that looks exactly the same but has absurd base stats, and have pokeballs disabled during the fight, instead having it willingly join you after a stupidly hard fight

Just because you can capture Pokemon doesn't mean that Pokemon can't be dickishly hard

The UB designs at least look all right and I'm willing to see what new stuff they're going to try both in terms of lore and possibly mechanics.

The single player really could do with something of a shake up since when you break it down to its base components it's mostly the same as it was in Gen 1 with just some added complexity that probably isn't taken advantage of entirely.

I also want to say that as they are now the UBs look nothing like something you'd see in SMT, Digimon, or FF since they still have something of the Pokemon aesthetic about them.

That is one of SMT's strong suits. There is plenty of interesting mythology and such out there to serve as a base to build upon.
