the anime's going to start off as a fun little slice of life about ash going to school in alola and making new friends
but then once the UBs show up it's going to be a complete deconstruction of everything that pokemon has ever been, examining the blurring line between man and pokemon and the ethics of sending sentient creatures into fights were they could be seriously injured or killed

I'm not far into HxH, but do they ever justify how random and hodgepodge the stuff in their world is? Even Naruto and One Piece have a consistent flair in their anachronistic tech universe.

Well, they have fully functional airships and cybernetic bullshit everywhere, but there are also sailboats, people using bows & arrows, and from what I've seen there is high tech architecture but no high tech security systems. It's almost like the author didn't event think before slapping shit together.

Did Gon using a fishing rod as a weapon bother you as well? It's pretty well established early on that different characters use different tools that fit their style of fighting, which can prove effective under certain circumstances.

This is exactly what DIDN'T happen in Hunter x Hunter though.
Some of the higher powered villains (Hisoka, Illumi) appeared right at the beginning of the manga and they're still very much relevant (in term of power level) hundreds of chapters later.
The strongest villain to date wasn't even beat by the main characters.

Netero didn't ask the strongest hunters for help with the Ants because it was unnecessary. He's a cocky bastard and thought he could handle the King; even despite this he took the necessary precautions to guarantee victory just in case.
