Gee, I wonder what it could be, anon.

There's been nothing "surprising" about starters in forever. They evolve twice into a final form. That's been the shtick for the longest time.

Now that Rockruff has been revealed to have a secret, and that the starters have a surprising one too, then come to find out Rockruff has TWO forms using the same name, I find it hard to believe that isn't just a coincidence.

You would have to be a colossal retard to be so close-minded.

I believe it now, I posted a theory a few days ago that the Chinese leaker only played Pokemon moon and thus didn't see the day formes of the starters.

For example, he said only that rockruff evolves into a werewolf, not mentioning the split formes at all. Since moon version is at night a lot of the time, it's reasonable to assume that's when he evolved his rockruff and never even knew it had it had a daytime form. Since the starters also have a secret, I presume they also have daytime formes.

This would mean the leaked starter evolutions are the night ones since the leaker never mentioned any others. Since your rival has a starter too, I imagine it will evolve into the night version in moon and daytime in sun.

Split evos get their own index and number. Game might as well move away from 3 stage evos for starters into 2 split evos. Each you decide whenever to evolve during night or day.

Mainly since if it was split evos, they would have to put even more, most likely very similar, looking starter final evolutions to all promotional art if Popplio, Litten and Rowlet all have two final evolutions. Also they have been absolutely crazy with formes with the new pokemon, its not even confirmed that Rockruff's two stages are evolutions or formes.

Nah, Gastrodon doesn't split off from a common base though. Wormadam is more similar, because depending on the conditions you evolve it in (terrain for wormadam, day/night for this) you get a different form.

I expect two sun and moon evos for all 3 starters but you can only pick one. Encourages trading starters to get the rest of the index filled.

We know how it works.

His second stage is dependent on the time he's evolved. It's the same Pokemon with different appearances and likely a separate movepool.

That's not a valid reason to say it can't evolve again though. Nor is it really an additional secret if he does.

But I'm not up on my dex numbers so I don't know if we have confirmation he can only evolve once.

If it shares day/night evo's with the starters, would the starters already chance form after their first stage? or after their second? Because if it's after their second stage, i suspect Rockruff's evo is also a final stage. All is of this is pure speculation of course

Think about the evolutions of the starters being as Giratina
Once Giratina is out of the reverse world, its form changes.
We know that in pkmn Sun is always day and in pkmn Moon is always night. When you transfer your starters to the other game, they might chance their forms until you transfer them back, the change is reversed...

Sun is day during day and night at night.

As someone who plays mostly late at night I love this. It lets me have either since fucking with the DS clock screws with a lot of other games.

Its just the new Meowstic, with a time gimmick instead of a gender gimmick. Same pokedex entry, same name, form is locked, but effectively different pokemon.

They are doing it to introduce more pokemon while saving space in the pokedex. Same reason for wishiwashi's ability being level locked to effectively being a reversible evolution. It lets them add 'more' pokemon without cluttering the dex.

Also, the riddler confirmed that Rockruff's secret is similar to "something". In a previous riddle given at the start of August, he give this:

Vikavolt's true identity is actually ___.
The pokemon Yungoos is suppose to eradicate is an old pokemon's ___.
Rockruff's secret is the same as ___.

He revealed the answers later as "Totem", "Alola Form", and kept the last unrevealed, hinting that it is a "heavyweight" question.

I think split forms for the starters are very likely, but who knows, the answer could be Eevee or Meowstic for all we know.

Up to then, the sum of given riddles + revealed pokemon is 17. The riddler made a list about them and decided to include the starters' 2nd evo as 18-20, 3th evo as 21-23, and Pikipek's 2 evo as 24 and 25. He eventually abandoned this numbering system this picture is based on.

Does it prove anything? Hardly.

The only thing we have to prove is, strangely, the oddities people are pointing out in the leaked starter evolutions in how they are all "Night" themed.

It's mostly musing from me at this point, but Rockruff's branching form evolutions does lead to some unanswered questions, most particularly the one where it was shown to have some link to the starters. This has been speculated on for MONTHS, with no actual idea on what the link was.

Disregarding the idea that Rockruff's evolutionary forms have nothing to do with the starter's "special secret" is moronic just because "that's not what it is" somehow rolls off the tongue easier when it comes to explaining all this "special secret" bullshit.

The leaked starter evos are all Night versions if the split is real. Fire/Dark litten, simply because evil; Hunter Rowlet3; Poppmaid being extremely feminine, which ties to the symbolism of the Moon.

I believe that, like Rockruff, the day evolutions would be much more traditional, "just geta bigger" if you will. So Litten would be quadrupedal for example. It does fit: more traditional daytime evos, and more outlandish/quirky night time evos.

I believe such a split would be a win/win for everyone, as some people prefer traditional evos, and some like conceptual evos better.

I mean, it sucks that some of the fakes aren't real (Ballio and friends seem to be out of the running, for instance) and inevitably hurts them, but at the same time, they should have known better than to become overly attached to them in the first place before they were confirmed.

What makes me hopeful is that Rockruff clearly was made with that in mind already. They're two extremes in pokemon design philosophy and everyone will love either of them, some both. The "bigger dog" Arcanine fans, and the Zoroark/Lucario fans.

They've made it clear that they want starter evos to be more of a 'surprise' nowadays, which means we're going to see a lot of questionable design decisions in the future. I'm just hoping that they'll see fit to do both.

Yeah. Rockruff is what gives me a lot of hope for that. Dayruff has a very clearly traditional design in just a pretty standard wolf with the designated element stuck to it, while wereruff is very much a newer, more humanoid design.
