Actually, the evolutions can be time based AND due to time mechanics of two versions, version exclusive. Just make Rockruff evolve at Noon/Midnight.

It's form changes. That would explain why the Midnight form is drastically different from rockruff. Like a werewolf mechanic thing. Midday its innocent and normal looking wolf. Midnight it goes crazy, that's why its eyes are always glowing red. Then it reverts back when the sun rises. I really like this mechanic^ if its true

If you actually read Jap, you can see that they are making a deal that the two versions are different worlds. The big words near the dogs are

Midnight form - クールな夜世界 (Cool Night world)
Key word is world (World = Version)

I'm going to wait for the TPC to release the info because this is confusing. It doesn't really make much sense to me for the evolutions to be version exclusive. How would they determine what it evolves into in future games? What if they eventually ditch the 2-game model or start doing 3rd versions again? As someone who is actually fluent in Jap it does indeed say Sun-exclusive/Moon-exclusive.

This is going to be interesting because its paving the way for one version of Gen7 to be objectively superior in terms of competitive battling.
