Yeah, a lot of people used Lapras on their first play through.
Nobody used Gyrados because you didn't know it evolved from Magikarp, and even if you did know, Magikarp sucked so much in battle that you didn't have the patience to get it to whatever level it needed to evolve.
And to get a Kadabra, you had to first catch an Abra (frustrating to a complete newbie) and also train that fucker up like you did with Magikarp.
It was much easier and less frustrating to just power through battles with your starter, who was probably level 20 or 30 by now.
Plus, Abra and Magikarp didn't look very cool.
