I didn't know zooplankton had mosquito like proboscis, antenna, wings or that they absorbed liquids and expanded.

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if they were not designed as a mix of those. Translucent bodies which resemble tiny marine guys, insect-like parts, and being a personification of a type of cell.

They're both. A hideous amalgam of the monstrosities of the deep and the most reviled of insects.

There is is a connection to the deep sea going on here, with 01 being all jellyfish and the general lovecrafty feel, but it might just be a design inspiration rather than an actual theme of the characters.

Why can't they be a cross breed of insects and zooplankton OP? Absorption is obviously more closely related to a mosquito and Beauty might have more zooplankton characteristics but coach roach qualities.

Think I put it a little bit too straight. I agree that it's a part mosquito but the general design comes from that red zooplankton. It's shape and colour have nothing to do with mosquitos but are clearly similar to what I posted.

I feel like the consensus is just weird, obviously alien-esque designs. Ranging from a ton of different, typical and abstract animals that are used to depict what an alien could possibly resemble. The most common ones I can think of are sea creatures like octopi and jellyfish. I can also imagine all those eccentric deep sea creatures, as well as the microscopic ones, being base ideas for alien designs. They sure as he'll remind me of aliens when I see them, especially with them appearing almost illuminated with the background dead black with particles that resemble stars.
And who can forget bug eyed monsters, common references to aliens with abnormally large eyes? It's pretty common for aliens to be designed with insects and such in mind.

With all those in mind, I think we can anticipate other typical archetypes of aliens through other medias, like octopi, blue humanoids, cat like humanoids, and other stuff. Not sold on the idea of something other than Pokemon and humans in the Pokemon world, but I've always wished for an expansion on space in huge games.

I heard a 'pest' theme for these which is brilliant.

Due to global warming, Jellyfish are multiplying rapidly. Mosquitos and Cockroaches are some of the most populous pest insects.

With this idea in mind, what other pests could they use? I'm not really sure if we could get a rat-like UB.

Seagulls, geese, Cane Toad, Japanese Beetle, Tetse Fly if isn't too similar to Absorption, Gypsy Moth, various molds, Kudzu, Ragweed, Thistle, moss.

Actually krills' larval forms are considered zooplankton, and Absorption looks like it took other elements from adult krill too.

Jellyfish are also zooplankton.
