If they never specify his age, then they could continue to make series like SM or the Gen 8 anime take place before the epilogue in which the 10 year old Ash's journeys involve things other than challenging gyms and leagues. Besides, it'll be easier for the audience to see him lose a league if we know he ends up becoming the badass he always wanted to be in the end.
Think of it like the second Gintama movie which was made to serve as a potential epilogue to the series at the time while the anime could continue to milk Gintoki's adventures without stopping.
People want to see Pokemon anime with different characters, but TCPI/TV Tokyo/OLM doesn't seem to understand that everyone wants Ash to see some sort of closure and win as well.
