The term mythical was only a recent thing. Legendary has been the accepted term for Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, and so on since the dawn of the franchise, fagbuster.

Legendary now describes a one-of, super-powerful Pokémon. Mythicals are Legendaries that can only be gotten through Nintendo events (Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, Deoxys*, Darkrai, Shaymin, Arceus, Victini, Keldeo, Meloetta, Genesect, Diancie, Hoopa, and Volcanion)

All Mythicals are Legendary but not all Legendaries are Mythical

Because Gamefreak can't seem to get it into their heads that event exclusivity is the worst fucking thing ever, and they keep making them to make sure all the little Japanese children go to their movies so they can get their download codes for the Mythical of the Movie.

Basically it's the continuing popularity of the anime that keeps this shit going.

I'm probably autistic, but I think the differences between Mythical and Legendary is that legendaries can produce offspring. In the Lugia movie, there was a baby Lugia (iirc) and I think that pokemon like that (the birds, the dogs, cresselia, darkrai) are always in the Pokémon world, but very very rare. While Mythical Pokémon are those of Myths. Creation Pokémon, revered as deities, such as Groudon and Kyogre, Palkia and Dialga, Xerneas and Yveltal, that are embodiments of natural order, and there are only 1 of each of those and only show themselves in times of disaster
