Man, maybe this is nostalgia flowing upon me but I miss old Ken Sugimori style.
Them square eyes and delicious water color painting is still superior than the shit we are getting now.

Honestly, I put it down to a combination of nostalgia goggles and an artist growing into their style. Obviously he was immature as an artist, and he enjoys the work he's doing now. Anyway, the Poke designs have barely changed, only thing that's different in these pictures is the colouring.

He later adapted to the anime style.

I thought Gen 2 is the one mostly looks like his old art.

Uhg, the old style had some good and bad stuff too, just look how pointy his face and legs was, specially the legs, someone could think he forgot de fix those and just went with it, otherwise the clothes look really nice, really nice design

Look at those godawful fucking eyes on that shell. This would definitely look better in later generations. Then you have Voltorb and co. who's a fucking ball with anime eyes. And shit like Marowak where there's no sense of depth with the skull's eye holes because of it. It's not good.

Sugi art is cool and definitely gets the nostalgia juices flowing. It's very reminiscent of Akira Toriyama.

As much as I like the old art style I'm glad pokémon art has evolved into a new style. Without change it would be way too much of a love letter to Toriyama.

While the new art is strictly better I prefer his old blockier "mailbox" bodies for some reason. They were more appealing to me as a kid than the ones he has now; everyone seems so skinny and open-hearted that reminds me of Disney. One of the reasons I liked pokémon as a kid was the sense of threat and edge. As an adult I'm aware that that line of thinking is stupid.

Sugimori has been improving on a technical level, but his art has been losing all of its personality.

No one cared that his art was a little weird at first, because it was unique to pokemon.
