If you look at all the gen 4 designs, there's a fair few of them that look fine next to older mons. I mean, look at buneary or glameow or chatot, they are fine pokemon designs. It's shit like the starters or legendaries that go out of their way to look unlike pokemon from previous gens.And judging by how these different from the formula got so much publicity, it might have been an attempt to bring in new blood onto the franchise. Judging by how most people who started with gen IV seem to defend it to death while shitting on all other gens, I would say the succeeded. Though they seem to have reverted away from it, very few pokemon since gen IV have had the design choices that marked that gen's new pokemon.
