Well angry or more mature themes also sell better in the West than kiddy and lighthearted. It's entirely possible B/W was themed the way it was because of it's American (and thus Western) setting. XY doesn't necessarily prove there was a shift in design philosophy either. It was a big step for them to convert to 3D, so a little less edgy is easier to model and probably more appealing overall. SM/Alola is definitely a return to kiddy, which isn't necessarily bad. It's obvious they're doing it because of Yokai Watch's influence on the core child demographic. It's an unfortunate circumstance for older pokemon players, because Gen 5 has the best story due to the more mature and serious tone of the games.

Even if this is true which it's not, good. Fuck these XDDDD SO CURAZYY AND HAPPY XDD protags we have today. Much rather have a stoic serious looking protag. Much easier to self insert when the game avatar isn't always standing there with big dead eyes and a retarded grin for the whole game.

Since Unova is NYC, I like to think that Hilda is the youngest child of a rich Jewish family, but she doesn't want to be a stereotypical spoiled brat and she doesn't mind getting dirty as she lives her own adventure away from home.

Of all the flaws in X/Y, genwun pandering was one of the flaws they managed to avoid, at least for the most part.
