Both my friend Horikawa and I have learned Japanese to some extent.
I learned the alphabet and can pick out key words, phrases and names.
She is currently employed at retranslating ancient Japanese microfiche into modern english, much for the first time.
We are both white (online name for her).
So I laugh when people claim to be able to translate Japanese. Because they may be able to, but usually they are not up to the proper level to even matter.
