How come a lot of these new pokemon look better in-game than in their official artwork?

Its still sugimori who draws the final official artwork.
I think the only time this wasn't the case was for bw2 and that was only really for the nwe characters

Because this is the first gen that they didn't have to focus a lot of their attention on coverting 600+ sprites into 3D models. The Gen VI Pokemon felt like afterthoughts in their own game.

They have a lot more experience under their belts now, and now when they design a Pokemon they know it's being designed to be in 3D. The official art doesn't matter like it used to, because the official art was basically just a better-looking sprite.

I really fucking hope the final evolution starters look better in 3D because I swear to god, even after all the time I had to get used to them and all the fan art I've seen of them, I still feel like throwing them into a fucking trash can while pretending they don't even exist while I hopefully play through the game and enjoy it for what it is.

Jesus, I don't think I've ever felt like this regarding any trio.

Unlike older Pokemon, these are designed from the start to move in a 3D space. Many of them have non-obvious features (Bruxish's lure, Drampa's claws) that take advantage of not needing to look good in a still (or even looping) sprite.

Also, Ohmori is not a great artist and kind sucks at proportions/prspecctive. I'd honestly prefer if they just released posed HQ versions of the in-game models rather than 2D art next gen if it's going to be stuff like pic related.

If you google image search "litten evolution" you'll find a ton of fakemon that just look like larger tigers or sabertooth or the like. Stuff with Luxray-like proportions. Honestly would've preferred that.

i wish they put more emotion into lycanroc's midday form sprite like they did with its midnight form. i'm still choosing sun either way but midnight form is way more expressive while midday form is just standing there. i guess there's not a lot you can do with quadrupled pokemon though.
