All the characters from Lucas and Dawn to the new MCs use a set proportion model and feature similar facial and body traits. You can't compare Chicken-chan with the old Sugimori art, but you can compare her to Lyra, for example, or in this case, Serena. The change is much less noticeable; the main difference is that Ohmori did Chicken-chan, but he clearly drew her based on Sugimori's modern style.

They use height as a way to tell the age of a character because the facial features in manga are more simplified and characters in general tend to look younger because of their large eyes and small noses.
