I replayed most of them up to Adventure 2 in a blast of nostalgia a year ago, and I was shocked at how shitty they were. People complain about crappy gameplay, horrible controls and bugs galore, but A1 and A2 are pretty much just that.
And the story has always been "So bad it's funny" at best.
Strange how that shit was a lot more tolerable and cooler through the eyes of a kid.

funny enough it was Shadow's solo game that ruined the reputation of this series while SA2 survives on nostalgia and the fact that it introduced two popular recurring cast members.

Sonic could have been as popular as Mario and Pokemon today if Sonic Team had a brain and stuck to making Sonic a lighthearted series but they ruined everything.

Nostalgia mostly. It's really not an outstanding game by any means. More polished and focused than the original Adventure at least and the story was serviceable. Also some people really loved the Chao Garden.

In the case of this thread it's just got some of the most memorable dialogue for easy references.
