He eventually became part of a different group of mercenaries led by a man named Griffith, who eventually betrayed everybody when it seemed as if Guts was finally better than he was. In the process, Guts watched everybody he knew and cared for killed off by evil beings known as The Godhand, because Griffith sacrificed them all to gain power. In the process, this also caused the girl Guts loved to be violated with her mind broken into a child state.
Marked with a brand of sacrifice on his neck, Guts travels around constantly dealing with horrible, demonic entities that try to kill him at any chance in an absolute crapsack world.
And even more tragically
the series keeps going on overly long hiatuses
