"wasp" is a common misnomer in common names for insects, which is specifically why "true wasp" is used to specify the subfamily Vespinae, which are actually specific to wasps. Hornets are technically a subfamily of wasps, but again only those that can fit a more specific criteria, not just an arbitrary label. Vespinae vespidae vepsa denotes a hornet from a broader category of wasp, and they're basically aryan supermen if Hitler had actually be right but for wasps.
