I never really experienced Pokemon as a kid that I remember much. (Most of the my early memories are gone)
Apparently I liked the cartoons.

Where do I start as a adult???

I personally recommend avoid the animated series, its mostly repetitive and isn't that much fun to watch nowadays, but if you're curious you can watch some of the movie that are quite entertaining.

If you wanna start playing the game I recommend you pick up a copy of Black and White or their sequels because it provides a mostly fresh new story with newer monsters. And since Generation 7 is approaching in November that should keep you busy for a while.

Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver are excellent games as well, but they are really pricey nowadays so you should learn how to emulate them on your phone or on your computer.

You can pick up the first games on the 3DS eShop right now.

XY is good for beginners, Black and White are generally agreed to be better but they're also a higher difficulty than the originals and XY are.

Pokemon Sun and Moon are coming out soon so you could just wait for that.

There's no trick to it. Just pick up a game and play it. The recent X/Y or Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire games are fine choices, or wait a month and a half until Sun/Moon comes out.

OP it's very very simple. Get this software called a gba emulator, there's for PC or even android so you can use on your phone. Then you get a ROM, which is basically the game's virtual image, of either Pokémon Firered or Leafgreen, choose whatever you prefer.
Run the emulator, open the rom et voila.

But if you don't have one you could try starting from heart gold/soul sliver which are deemed by many as the best Pokemon games. They aren't very traditional Pokemon games however.

Since both those game are kinda rare your next best bet would be platinum or even better black/white

Ya, I kinda remember losing interest as the Pokemon became more "robot/alien like" don't know when that was.

Any adult versions of the anime? I know the original happened one had some banned episodes because they had guns. (Sad eh?)

What's the most classic with the best gameplay? I enjoy the original art wayyyyy better. Hate the new "cutsy" look. I think I stop my cousins hand held a few times... ruby or something... I dunno, when was that?

I used to watch the anime as a kid and stopped at the beginning of Hoenn, kinda?
As a teen I found out it was actually based on games, and played Silver first when I was 17 iirc (I didn't understand a thing, just used my Feraligatr and Pidgeot for everything).

A year later X came out, loved it as well and got hooked to this day.

I found out through a friend who loved BW and being exposed to those mons all the time made me love gen 5 so much, it's "my gen 1" if you will, but yeah I don't think you should start with them, it'll be confusing

Sounds like you might enjoy HeartGold/SoulSilver. Black/White is a great "classic"-style game too, if you're willing to deal with entirely new Pokémon for most of the game.

Not sure if you will like this but, all of the games are practically the same with little features and what not and the older Pokemon games (R/B/Y-G/S/C) are really shit by today's standards. It really doesn't matter where you start, personally my favorite games are the Black and Whites games because I love their Pokemon designs and how it felt like a retelling of the Pokemon world with a little bit more mature elements, while X and Y felt like it focused a lot of pandering to Generation one.

Just look up videos and reviews talking about the different regions and that should help you out.
