>>28767016>Gamefreak was bragging so much about Kalos representing beauty I feel dumb for not seeing the writing on the wall with XYYeah, now that you mention it..
I'm not gonna hop on the circlejerk, I don't think XY were total disasters like /vp/ tries to make it out to be. They were still Pokemon games, there hasn't been a legitimately bad mainline game to date.
But it was flawed. Very flawed. And I think a lot of it comes down to their mindset. It's very bizarre to me, its this weirdly structured, unmoving mindset, and when they push themselves they don't think to change fully with it. I mentioned that the overworld was 2D-disguised-as-3D, and what I mean by that is, they decided to transition to 3D, but kept it grid based and on a single plane. Everything is STILL tiled, astoundingly, despite looking like absolute ass in 3D. All encounter rates and movement, and "time" (such as egg hatching) is bound to that tile system. Yet the rollerskates take you off the grid? Like, what the fuck? What sort of thinking is that? It's like they take one inch out of their comfort zone at a time.
It wouldn't negatively impact a Pokemon game to move to genuine 3D. There's nothing inherently tied to a grid that defines Pokemon that couldn't be easily reworked.
Design greivances aside, Yokai Watch really does have a better overworld than Pokemon. Subtle things like being able to fall from ledges at varying heights shows that the dev's thought about it in a 3D perspective, not a 2D with 3D graphics. Its also a lot more visually fleshed out. They did it on their first attempt too, which isn't so much speaking to how great Yokai watch is or anything, but how behind Gamefreak is.
