It still won battles in its pre-evolved form, which is the same single creatue, just grown up. There's plenty of weaker Pokemon Ash had.

Switch Goodra with Noivern and Torkoal for Totodile. The latter at least had a great performance against Brandon's Registeel.

Why Noctowl? It wasn't used much and certainly wasn't STRONG, but it usually performed decently and did well in Morty and Conway battles.

But the anime makes it clear that battle is in real time and that pokemon as long as they and their trainer react quick enough and are quick enough can dodge an attack. I don't know how many times inaccurate moves miss aside from Focus Blast in the anime, but you'd think Goodra would have reacted.
