I haven't been on /vp/ in a while and I've noticed there hasn't been an injection thread in a while, why is that? Have those threads been getting deleted or something?

Not much reason to, we know bank transfers won't be here until January, and VGC is done, while Smogon format can just be done on Showdown. Only people that would really need injection right now are 3DS-based Counter Team Format players.
Easier to just wait until SM releases so you can have a relevant pokemon injected instead of something that may no longer be used.

I have an sort of old 3ds that I could use, the l button doesn't work, I've heard that it can't be used for injecting if it is up to date.

I dunno about the most recent update, but the update before it, you could get the homebrew channel working, and with that, access to injecting. I'm sure new exploits will be found soon in the present update.

there are already ways to get access to homebrew on 11.1 if you own Cubic Ninjas or Freakyforms Deluxe.

Finding primary entrypoints that don't require any game will be a lot harder and took 3 months last time.
