For most older players, having an older looking protag helps them relate a bit and not be reminded that they're a decade over the target audience every time they look at them.
And for another group they similarly want the female protags to look older so they don't feel like complete creeps for being attracted to them.
And while there are definitely those that want the female protags to be attractive in a sexual way, there are also those that simply find mature girls more attractive even in a nonsexual sense. A girl who looks like she's still in elementary school just isn't going to have much appeal to an older audience.
