Pokemon have always been, more or less, types of creatures out in the wild. With a few exceptions, until now they've been supposed to be species, not individuals. And taking new Pokemon and making them this one thing with one personality and one kind of disposition, takes away a huge amount of the fun of a living breathing world. Take luchalitten for example. I love the design in general, but as a Pokemon I think it's awful. I can't at all see several of them skulking around in the woods, hunting for prey, and wrestling for territory. I can't even picture two of them in the same battle since they'd be literal clones of each other in mannerisms, concept, etc. It'd look like a shitty open world game when you start to notice exactly the same NPC is here, there, and in the next town.
