It's also fairly old fashioned, so it tends to mark a lot of older characters as kind of out of touch or just old fashioned. A lot of times that means characters that are laborers by profession, either farmers, construction workers, or fishermen. In the case of diggersby it's obviously evoking the image of a construction worker, what with the dirt and shovel hand/ears.
