Mega evolution and Synchro are just an evolution of those concepts.
Digimon on the other hand, originally Digivolution used to be permanent outside of Jogress. That is until the anime happened and they had to keep the cute rookies to appeal to the kids and what not.

Aside from that it wasn't much different from Pokemon in regards to how the mon actually evolve and what not.
