I think things that look more aggressive and battle ready due to the fact they seem like the ancestors of "modern day" Pokemon since in dppt and xy suggest that, are much better designed on all stand points as it seems less pandering-ish. The best example is mega gyarados looking much more akin to magikarp and is much more adept at taking down larger prey, and then its base form shows how it adapted to prey getting smaller and humans changing the environment.
