Isn't it more Pikachu's fault that the anime will never let go of Ash?

If you remove Ash, you'd have to remove Pikachu.
And Pikachu is the series mascot.

Nope. They had a special where someone else got to have a Pikachu instead. And the vast majority of the specials didn't have Ash or Pikachu at all.
