How do you choose your party? Appearance? Type coverage? Cheat and look ahead to build for the future? Speaking purely for PvE, which kind of makes your party choice pretty moot because of how easy it tends to be.

I usually focus on type coverage, usability (I don't use boring defensive shit on an ingame team) and looks for my ingame team. Once I get to postgame I'll build a postgame team around a theme (usually around my shiny DDtar). I usually try to use as many new pokemon as possible. I only use legends with 600 or lower BST ingame and even then, usually not.

OR: Sceptile, Swellow, Camerupt, Sharpedo, Exploud, Armaldo
Y: Chesnaught, Vivilion, Furret, Azumarill, Tyrantrum, Heliolisk
B2: Haxorus, Scrafty, Archeops, Golurk, Weavile, Virizion

No overlapping types is the only thing I really do. Try not to reuse stuff, but I've used pretty much everything besides the ones I really can't stand at this point. Have my current blaze black 2 team, names are just random combinations of letters, wanted to see if that could work.

I try to use Pokemon exclusive to that region when doing an in-game run through, if a pokemon from another region gets a new evolution in the one I'm playing then I count that evolved form as a regional one.
I also try to get one dragon, one ghost, and one steel type since those are my favorite types in general.

In the games I can get one, I always a get Charizard. The rest of the team is purely based on what I feel like having at the time. There are times when I end up using multiple Pokemon of the same type.

Usually type coverage + designs I like. Though I have some sort of rule that I must use Water, Grass, Fire and Electric type pokemon in my teams for some reason. Don't always follow it but most of the time I get a pokemon of this type I try to make it fit in my team.

For playing through the games it really doesn't matter, it's not like you're not going to be able to clear the game with almost any team.

I usually do a monotype run. Even in new games. Though for Sun/Moon I bought one of each version, so I may do something different. Moon will be my main game were I catch em all and transfer my old games pokemon over. Sun will be my multiple playthrough cartridge.

Appearance, plus non-overlapping types.

Sometimes color and body type if I start to notice there are too many of a certain kind. It would bother me to have a team mostly consisting of blue Pokémon or four-legged Pokémon.

I always just pick what I think is cool (and can cover my TM needs). That lead me to having two wailords last time I played ruby (most recent pokemon game I played). If I die to a gym leader a few times I might train up someone from the box who will give me type coverage for that gym, and then keep them or not idk.

As for technique, i tend to just catch the first thing that comes along and fills a need I have, then replace it if a better fit comes along. Lategame, I may look up things' moveset if I still have some hard to fill specific niche filled.

Sinnoh was such a pain with that "only 1 fire type that's not a starter" thing.

Of note, I almost never catch pure normals as a result of this. No bias against them, in fact some I really like. There's just no good fit for them.

I try to find an optimal balance between coverage, appearence and stats, givibg precedence to the first two. I also try to avoid using pokemon I've used in the past, but sometimes I do anyway. Also no HM slaves, if I need an HM to progress I'll take whatever pokemon can do the job and then box it as soon as I can

To add to this I'm thinking of doing a "fantasy" themed run out of types relating to the fantasy/fairytale genre.

So I can use any mons from the fairy, ghost and dragon type. Any other obvious type I'm missing?

I go by appearance and try not to cross types, Fighting's my favorite, and I love all of the Fighting types SuMo has introduced so far which is what's giving me a rough time in the vein of picking just one
However, if I get dual types, its an exception to this rule(i.e. Greninja and Pangoro in Y playthrough)

Sometimes I go for only version exclusives, sometimes only gift and story based or gift Pokemon like Volcarona or Togepi.
Sometimes I just grab a Grass type, a Water type, a Fire type, and any other Pokemon I like.

Depends on first run or not. First run I usually pick faves and make it work, other runs depend entirely on my mood, sometimes I do plan ahead and counter everything, because that can be fun to try.

Usually I just slap on coverage for as much as I can, either way.

Ever since pokemon blue version on my gameboy pocket, I've picked one pokemon to represent rpg elements: earth, wind, fire, water, light, and darkness. Though sometimes I'll use a pokemon that just looks like that element but doesn't fit it type-wise (Mawile as my "darkness" type in Ruby)

As much as I like catching them on the fly, there's just too many pokes I really want to use on an in-game run that if I don't pre-plan I'll miss using them, also I tend to end up on my 8th badge with like 3-4 pokemon and realize I DID have space for that mon I wasn't sure on 4 gyms ago

(Arbok, Seviper, Weezing, Dustox, Vilipede line)
1 water type
(Feraligatr, Starmie, Relicanth)
1 normal type all-rounder wild card joker mon
(think Lickitung, Kecleon and so forth)
1 psychic or ghost type (Yamask, Xatu, Wobbuffet and so on)
1 electric,1 fire type or 1 flying type
(it depends. Ampharos hits pretty hard, fire type s are hit and miss, I like Magcargo because it's dual type, Skarmory because it's pretty useful to have, otherwise Xatu.)

I usually avoid training ground types, rock types and Steel types (except Skarmory). I don't like most Electric types. My favorite types are Poison, Psychic, Grass and Water.

I like the "Team Rocket" mons usually.

Usually, I only really decide on one Pokemon before playing a game, such as Vespiquen in a playthrough of B2 and a Whiscash in my recent playthrough of AS, and then the team just kinda comes together

I do tend to keep my starter though

My primary concern is type coverage. I cannot stand overlapping types. For fun, though, I like to have at least one shouldermon and a rough parity of genders.

Also, no HM slaves in my main six. I try to obtain a Bibarrel if possible and switch him out for one of my stronger party members when I need him.

I don't have any rules, but because of HMs I almost always have a water type and a flying type for convenience. That's one reason I'm excited about Sun and Moon because it looks like we won't be bound by that.

I also usually have a starter on my team. The first time I'll choose my favorite starter and the 2nd and 3rd replay I'll choose the others. I usually make my team out of Pokemon I haven't trained before, but sometimes I'll reuse favorites.

I build my teams based on three criteria:

1. All the pokemon I use have no overlapping types

2. At least half of my team is made up of pokemon from the new egion, with the other half typically being older pokemon I've never used before ( only B/W break this rule due to the no older pokemon until postgame)

3. I must be at least neutral to how the pokemon looks, I won't use a pokemon if i can't stand how it looks.

I try to do decent type coverage. Pick whichever starter looks cool, feel my way around the early game and use whatever I find, then do a little research in the later game to improve my team comp (usually replacing a shitmon with something good that I missed). I like using stuff I've never tried before but certain mons are too good to pass up.
I almost always roll with a Fighting-type (too damn useful). Since it has Iron Fist, Crabrawler will probably have the full array of elemental punches; provided its stats aren't total shit it's the one mon I know I'm going to use.
