try to go for a used one or get the normal n3ds mario bundle (which comes on 10.7) or a brand new 2ds (which comes in some old ass firmware)

Depends how long the system has been at
the store you're buying it. If they recently
restocked, anywhere from the latest
firmware, to one or two updates before.
Chances are, you'd have to update before
doing anything online. I assume this is for
modding purposes

Just got a 2ds today, the one that comes with the free mario 7 code, it cames with the 6.0 firmware, forgot to buy a new SD card so i'm gonna have to wait till monday to get a9lh

Oh, right, in that case i suppose it would be a good idea, the models would look so good in a better and bigger screen, and if it keeps having the same fps issues then he could use Luma to overclock his n3ds and gets a smoother experience while playing

Np man, just try to get an used one that already has a9hl, if not try to ask what firmware it has, if it is 11.XX or higher then it might be a lot harder to install a9hl and luma, so be careful
