They went from trying new stuff in the series straight back to genwum/pre gen V pandering. Kanto starters, Lucario statue, etc. They also explicitly didn't include a gen V mega in XY, and very few gen V Pokémon.

Obviously they had too balance out the amount per gen, but gen V gets a lot of rep. Elemental monkeyd, venipede, audino, scraggy, ducklett, axew, and mienfoo are all fairly early game. And there a ton more late game, but I don't feel like listing everything
