unless they managed to take a sneak peek at whether the dog actually has some junk in there.
If you shoved me a Pitbull in my face, I'd just instantly assume it for it to be male, but that doesn't mean I'm actually right, I'm just assuming it's male by appearance until the owner corrects me so I'm able to call it properly by its real gender.
People just usually use pronouns that they think are more fitting for the situation, even if they aren't entirely sure if that pronoun is correct to use.
