Playing through these games has made me really glad that Sun and Moon are copying a lot of ideas from Yokai Watch. There is so much Pokemon could learn from it.

I haven't played any Yokai Watch games, so I'm genuinely curious, what concepts do you feel that Pokemon should adopt?

For my part, I'll just say that I've heard that the battle mechanics are far too simplistic, and that I really, really dislike the YW character designs.

That does seem directly inspired by YW. It remains to be seen whether it's a good move or not. It could be a fun companion that provides actually useful features, or it could be a game-long tutorial-dispenser that reminds you every five minutes where you're supposed to be going.

I'm optimistic, but it's definitely a concern.

even though i was ~13 when Pokemon first hit the scene, it reminded me of how i was into RBY. played the game all the time with friends, mainly.

the first YKW game was fun, though. i haven't played YKW2 yet, but i'll play it after i'm done the newest Phoenix Wright. it'll scratch the itch until SM comes out

If I recall, it was clear by early 2014 that YW was a hit. That was probably right around when SM development was getting started, and at any rate early enough to add major features like the Rotomdex. I'm not saying it definitely was inspired by YW, but it's not implausible.

Started, no, but it likely wasn't deep into development. They had probably finished development on XY in mid-2013, so it would have been a few months in if they shifted those staff over and used a different team for ORAS. That's absolutely early enough to make feature changes, which may have been tempting based on the quick success of YW in Japan.

If you mean that you think the battles are slow and tedious there pressing X speeds them up. If you mean just getting around I can understand that, but you get the bike and fast travel eventually. It's not very different from Pokemon in that regard.
