You're justifying it in retrospect. You wouldn't have been given Dewott and said you expected it to go from a biped otter using a shell as a weapon to a blue biped otter with two shells to a unicorn sea lion that stands on all fours with a huge mustache and barely ever uses its weapons, in most official art and depictions at least.
