For one, the odds are stacked against you in a way that you can't manipulate without risking the whole thing if the numbers randomly say you should.
For example, there's the fact that rarer Pokemon had lower catch rates and higher escape rates meaning that there was a high chance that it would escape after you make an action unless you get extremely lucky and get it in one.
Then, there's the removal of choice. You couldn't even choose what Pokeball to use and you were limited to only 30 of the safari balls that only had a 1.5 multiplier on it so you were just throwing green great balls. Which aren't exactly effective at the point where the Zones are in each game as you usually have access to Ultra Balls or other varieties like the Apricorn Balls, Timer Balls, Quick balls and so on.
These are what we call flaws. You can power through these flaws and enjoy yourself but it doesn't mean the thing in question is particularly good.
